The Distinct Count Dashboard is an online data set that tells us about the children served in the Kansas early childhood care and education system. A recent update to data sources shows that 107,031 children, birth through age 5, benefit from programs and services like licensed child care, prekindergarten, home visiting, and Part C (early intervention services for infants and toddlers with disabilities or developmental delays and their families). Partners from four Kansas state agencies —KDHE, KCCTF, KSDE, and DCF— contribute to the data set, which also helps us understand where services are being provided across the state and the kinds of services received.
With the newest update, the Distinct Count Dashboard includes annual data for each of the last three state fiscal years (July 2022 through June 2025), and future years’ data will be added as it becomes available. This commitment to measuring impact across the ecosystem is a core component of the All In For Kansas Kids Strategic Plan’s collaboration and alignment goals.
Prior to the Distinct Count Dashboard, each individual data set from state agencies and data collection methodologies differed by program, which posed a significant barrier to understanding ecosystem services holistically. As part of the Kansas Early Childhood Data Trust initiative, researchers at the University of Kansas Center for Public Partnerships and Research unified and standardized the data to present a comprehensive, distinct count.
Because the Distinct Count Dashboard incorporates longitudinal datasets to which state agencies contribute new data each year, the most recent update allows users to analyze historical trends at county and regional levels. In addition, county-level US Census population estimates overlay program data to show the proportion of children receiving services across the state relative to the total population of children in the county or region. This information helps communities and leaders in the early childhood ecosystem identify needs and gaps in service provision across the state.
